Chapter 14

I crouched in the yard of a one-story bungalow residence across from Bruce Clarkson’s and watched his house. I had returned home to find my car parked in front, the tires looking brand new. There was no note to tell me who had brought it or why, but I didn’t need it. I knew Hawthorn was responsible, and I didn’t like that. It was also nothing I wanted to spend time contemplating.

After changing and choking down a protein bar—ignoring Bonkers’ frenzied meows—I drove to the courthouse, where I parked my car before entering the ether and coming straight here. There was no need for me to crouch or hide since I was in the ether. As far as I knew, only creatures from other realms could see into a higher plane, and unless they were in the same spectrum, all they’d see was a blurry silhouette. But I wasn’t taking any chances.

My priorities had shifted; I needed to find the missing Grosh, why and how the cult were summoning them. It was common knowledge that powerful sacrifices produced more magic and energy. I expected one sacrifice—one ritual—granted the summoner enough power to command one Grosh for a few days or a handful of small tasks, but the Grosh weren’t being used. Not to murder insanely powerful supernaturals, high-ranking officials, rob the hidden safes of the Bank of America, or cause worldwide catastrophe. Instead, supernaturals were sacrificed, Grosh were summoned, but then nothing happened. And it had been happening for years without anyone the wiser.

Captain Bradshaw had suspected the Church of Xelder had an ulterior motive for the sacrifices and the dark rituals. He believed that they were building up to something. But we’d never managed to get anyone into the ranks of the cult without our efforts being thwarted, resulting in the disappearance or death of several agents, including Ian’s. He’d been found east of Decker after going dark for weeks.

There were more agents, other than Thurman and Roger, investigating the known members from other towns, but I didn’t think they were making any more progress than we were. They didn’t report to me, but if progress had been made, I had no doubt Thurman or Roger would bring me up to date.

I’d returned home from the Zavari realm with more questions than I’d left with, and fewer answers as well. What I knew was now shrouded by doubt, and I was no longer as certain of things as I’d been.

While I was inclined to believe the cult were building up to something, I was no longer sure there was a leader orchestrating everything behind the scenes. Maybe we couldn’t find this illusive person because they didn’t exist.

Movement at Bruce’s house drew my attention out of my musings. I watched as Bruce, dressed in leathers and carrying a cloth pouch, jumped into his car and drove away. I waited a few minutes, then stood to my full height and crossed the street.

The wards surrounding Bruce’s house were a surprise, scorching me from the sidewalk, compelling me to turn around and leave.
